WEBCAST THE SCIENCE OF PROTEIN

Webcast: The science of protein

Date: Friday 6th March
12 Midday - 1PM GMT

On Friday 6th March, we held our first Expert Community webcast of 2015 – The Science of Protein – where we discussed the emerging science around the benefits of different types of dietary protein.

Recently published data suggests that ingesting a combination of proteins with fast, intermediate and slow digestion rates could prolong amino acid delivery to tissues which may lead to differences in muscle protein synthesis rates (Reidy et al, 2013).

We were delighted to have an impressive panel of experts joining us to discuss the latest science in this area, to share new research being carried out at the GSK Human Performance Lab and discuss the implications of current evidence on preferred sources of protein.

The webcast was hosted by Lynn Clay, Head of Expert Science at the GSK Human Performance Lab. The panel that joined Lynn was as follows:

  • Dr. Elisa Glover, PhD - Senior Scientist (specialising in protein science), GSK
  • Brad Sanderson, MPhil, PGDip (Sports Nutrition) - Principal Scientist, GSK Human Performance Lab
  • Dr. Mark Cope, PhD - Clinical Scientist specialising in protein science, muscle metabolism and body composition, DuPont Health and Nutrition

Dr. Elisa Glover

Senior Scientist

Elisa is a senior scientist at GSK, specialising in the science of protein. She has authored over 13 peer reviewed journal articles on muscle metabolism and Physiology and was fortunate enough to formerly study under the world renowned Professor Stuart Phillips, looking at the maintenance of metabolically active skeletal muscle mass. She is currently exploring the role of different types or protein on muscle mass.

Dr. Mark Cope

PhD, Clinical Scientist

Mark has a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (USA) and a PhD in Nutrition Sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (USA). Mark has published several high impact papers and book chapters related to nutrition and body composition. With over 15 years of experience in nutrition research and a background in obesity and muscle health, Mark’s role as a clinical Nutrition Scientist at DuPont Nutrition & Health is to manage clinical research projects related to body composition-evaluating the role of nutrition on muscle recovery, muscle growth and strength.

Brad Sanderson

Principal Scientist

Brad is Principal Scientist at the GSK Human Performance Lab and has over 7 years experience working in research and development for GSK. Brad has a background in vascular medicine and exercise physiology and experience working across a wide spectrum of environments from clinical research, applied physiological support to grass roots coaching. Brad is the principal researcher on our recent study looking at plasma amino acid responses in whey and two different protein blends over a 6 hour period after consumption.
