On Thursday 10th December, the HPL held its final webcast of 2015, 'Injury management for athletes'.

This webcast explored how a multi-disciplinary approach can be adopted for the prevention and management of sports injuries including individualised strategies in the key areas of: physiotherapy, nutrition and strength and conditioning.

Our impressive panel of experts shared applied insights from their fields of expertise.

Topics discussed included:

  • Prevention of injury
  • Acute management of initial injury
  • End stage injury and translation to performance


The webcast was hosted by Tessa Morris, Senior Scientist at the GSK Human Performance Lab. Joining Tess on the panel were:

Tessa Morris

Senior Scientist, GSK HPL

Tessa is a Senior Scientist and has been at the GSK Human Performance Lab since June 2013, leading on discovery research and collaborating with elite partners. She has previously worked at Liverpool John Moores University, before starting as a Performance Scientist for Lucozade. Tess has great experience working within team sports in particular, including the Premier League for five years, as well as individual sport athletes in British athletics and triathlon. 

One of her roles within the HPL team is Science Lead for McLaren Honda Formula One and Rory McIlroy, as well as a supporting role with other partners, including extreme exploration. Tess is studying for her PhD with Kings College London in the Centre for Human Aerospace Physiology.

Martin O'Connell

Consultant Physiotherapist, Championship Football Club

Mr Martin O'Connell is recognised as a Chartered Physiotherapist with a specialist interest in Soft Tissue functional asymmetries and complex soft tissue dysfunction. He is the pioneer of the technique of 'Fibrolysis ' which has led to him being known as 'hookman' in the football/rugby world.

Having worked in elite football for more than 18 years both with Premiership and Championship teams, he recalls the highlight as being part of a multi disciplinary medical team who supported a squad that reached a Europa League Final.

Now he shares his clinical time consulting in professional football, whilst also heading up The St George's Hill Performance Centre at the St George's Hill Golf Club in Weybridge Surrey. In his spare time he is a very keen single figure golfer and manager of an u14s Ashford Town junior side.

Dr. Duncan French

Strength and Conditioning Lead, English Institute of Sport 

As Technical Lead of Strength and Conditioning Coaching at the English Institute of Sport (EIS), Duncan is responsible for coaching international, world and Olympic athletes from a variety of sports, from football and basketball, to taekwondo. He is a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology (Strength and Conditioning) at Northumbria University and a founding member and former Chairman of the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA).

Duncan provides the HPL with both academic and practical expertise in the fields of neuroendocrine and muscle physiology, in particular responses to resistance training and the mechanisms of recovery and regeneration.

Wendy Martinson

Lead Nutritionist, GB Rowing Team

Wendy martinson, OBE, is a sports nutritionist and a registered dietitian with the Health and Care Professionals Council. Wendy has substantial experience in delivering applied nutritional support at the elite level, supporting athletes throughout three summer Olympic Games; as a Consultant Nutritionist to the British Olympic Association (BOA) with whom she worked for 4 years, and the British Gymnastics squad with whom she worked for 8 years. 

In the build up to the 2002 World Cup, Wendy consulted to the England Football squad and, in 2005, Wendy was appointed as the nutritionist for GB Rowing. Wendy’s career has also seen her deliver nutritional support to World Class Hockey and the English National Ballet. Wendy currently resides as Lead Performance Nutritionist at the English Institute of Sport. In the 2010 New Years Honours list, Wendy was awarded an OBE for services to sport and nutrition.
