Webcast: Digestive health and performance

On Friday, 6th May 2016, the HPL held its first Science Community webcast of 2016, Digestive health and performance.

This webcast explored background insights into gastrointestinal physiology, prevalence and incidence of gastrointestinal distress in the population, as well as causes. The panel discussed the implications of gastrointestinal distress on athletes and their performance, as well as practical strategies to manage these.

This webcast was hosted by Matthew Furber, HPL Senior Scientist, who was joined by:

  • Prof. Glenn Gibson - Professor of Food Microbiology, Head of Food Microbial Sciences
  • Dr. Robert Fearn - Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist, Homerton University Hospital Foundation Trust

Matthew Furber

Senior Scientist, GSK HPL

Matthew has been working as an applied and research scientist at the GSK Human Performance Lab since it opened in 2013. He leads on a number of elite applied sport partnerships within the HPL, including close work with British Triathlon Federation and GB Canoeing. In addition to this, Matthew is a national trainer for UK Anti-Doping and sits on the education team. Prior to the HPL he worked as sport scientist for Lucozade Sport and lectured in Sport Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the University of Hertfordshire, where he also managed the Human Performance Centre. Matthew is currently writing up his PhD thesis on dietary manipulation, endurance training and cellular adaptation.

Ana Antón-Solanas

Senior Scientist (RD), GSK HPL

Before joining the HPL team in early 2013, Ana worked as a Nutritionist in the Nutrition and Medical Affairs team at GSK Consumer Healthcare. She has previous experience working as a lecturer assistant and researcher at the University of Navarre (Spain). Before specialising in sports nutrition she also worked as a dietitian in a clinical environment and as a sales agent for a leading food company. Ana is studying for her PhD with Nottingham Trent University.

Prof. Glenn Gibson

Professor of Food Microbiology, The University of Reading

8 books, >450 research papers, >300 published abstracts, 10 patents, >19,000 career citations (h factor = 74), 69 PhD students (some co-supervised); 120 research contracts; >700 conference presentations

He currently researches acute and chronic gut disease, autism, obesity, novel prebiotics, human metabonomics. Specific projects on pro/prebiotics, gas production, gut microflora development with age, gastroenteritis and colonic homeostasis are being carried out. Human trials are a major facet of the research, with initial principles being tested in gut models.
He was responsible (with Professor M Roberfroid) for instigation of the prebiotic concept for gut microbiota management through diet.

Dr. Robert Fearn

Homerton University Hospital Foundation Trust

Robert Fearn is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust where he is clinical lead for gastrointestinal physiology and nutrition. 
Having graduated in Medicine from Leeds University, he undertook his postgraduate training in London and Cambridge gaining experience in neurogastroenterology, advanced nutrition and intestinal failure. Dr. Fearn also has qualifications in sports medicine and has worked with elite athletes in a wide range of sports. He has been a Team Physician in professional and international football and was a Sports Medicine Doctor at the London 2012 Olympics. He has ongoing duties as a Medical Officer to equestrian sport and with the British Boxing Board of Control. 

His clinical and academic interests include the investigation and management of gastrointestinal distress in athletes, elite sport nutrition and the consequences of chronic undernutrition including metabolic bone health. Dr. Fearn treats athletes from both continuous and intermittent sports and continues to work to develop the evidence and knowledge base in this population.
