Bone health in athletes – exploring the relationship between health and athletic performance

On Wednesday 8th July, the GSK HPL held its third expert webcast of 2015, Bone Health in Athletes – Exploring the Relationship Between Health and Athletic Performance.

This webcast featured an impressive panel of experts who highlighted contemporary scientific literature and shared applied insights from their areas of expertise, exploring the prevalence and aetiology of health issues in athletes.

Topics discussed included:

  • Bone health in athletes within the broader context of how athlete health underpins performance
  • The impact of energy balance, athletic training and nutrition on bone health
  • Other health-related issues, with practical recommendations provided
  • Applied recommendations that may be used to inform best practice and athletic performance


The webcast was hosted by Dr. Ken van Someren, Research and Development Director at the GSK Human Performance Lab. Joining Ken on the panel were:

  • Dame Kelly Holmes - Double Olympic Champion and Technical Advisor, GSK Human Performance Lab

Dr. Ken van Someren

Head of R&D, GSK HPL

As Director of Research & Development at the GSK HPL, Ken leads on discovery research and scientific support of high performance partners. Prior to joining GSK, he was Director of Sports Sciences at the English Institute of Sport, leading the sport science support to British sports and athletes in the four years leading up to London 2012. Ken now holds a position on the Technical Advisory Board of the English Institute of Sport.

His research interests include the physiological determinants of sports performance, exercise-induced muscle damage and athletic recovery strategies. With long-standing experience in the academic sector, Ken currently holds a number of academic appointments, including Visiting Professor at Northumbria University and visiting Professor at St Mary’s University.

Ana Antón-Solanas

Dietitian and Sports Nutritionist, GSK HPL

Ana has been the Sports Nutritionist at the GSK HPL since April 2013, having previously worked as a nutritionist in the nutrition category at GSK Consumer Healthcare. She has previous experience working as a lecturer assistant and researcher at the Universidad de Navarra (Spain). Before specialising in sports nutrition she also worked as a dietitian in a clinical environment and as a sales agent for a leading food company.

Dame Kelly Holmes

Technical Advisor, GSK Human Performance Lab

Kelly served in the military for nearly ten years, firstly as a heavy goods vehicle driver and then as a Physical Training instructor in the British Armed Forces. She established herself as a professional sports woman during her military career, culminating in her winning two gold medals at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Bringing a wealth of world-class athletic experience to the GSK Human Performance Lab, Kelly provides insight into the world of elite sport and ensures the Lab remains relevant to the needs of athletes. 

In her role she advises on a variety of performance factors including testing protocols and the introduction of new athletic groups.

Dr. Charles Pedlar

St. Mary’s University and Lead Physiologist at ORRECO

Following his MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Wolverhampton, Charlie took up a post as a Research Assistant for the British Olympic Association based at Northwick Park Hospital and at other EIS sites in London working as an applied Sports Scientist. Charlie completed his PhD at Brunel University in 2007 entitled “Sleep and Exercise During Acclimation and Acclimatisation to Moderate Altitude in Elite Athletes”, which involved designing and testing acclimatisation strategies in elite athletes in the GB international squad for speed skating, biathlon, rowing, kayaking and athletics.

He is now the Academic Director for Research at St Mary’s University and the Lead Physiologist and Special Projects Manager at ORRECO.

Dr. Craig Sale

 Nottingham Trent University

Craig is a Reader in Applied Physiology and Research Coordinator of the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement Research Centre at NTU. Craig received his doctorate from Liverpool John Moores University, following the completion of his BSc and MSc programmes at the same institution. Following his studies he was a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at the University of Chichester and then a Senior Scientist at QinetiQ Ltd. 

Craig has spent the last 15 years investigating the impact of exercise and nutrition on health and performance in humans, with a particular focus on the triggers for adaptations in bone and muscle.
