Symposium: The impact of movement on health, performance and pain

Date: Friday 16th September 9:30am – 3.30pm BST
Venue: Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London

On Friday 16th September, the GSK Human Performance Lab hosted its annual Science Community symposium at the Natural History Museum in London – The impact of movement on health, performance and pain.

The symposium explored the scientific background and practical considerations of movement and its role within maturation, elite performance and pain.

There was an impressive line-up of expert speakers presenting on subjects including: the importance of instilling good movement patterns in children, measures to detect injury risk and symptoms of pain, optimised movement in performance and types of pain that effect or are affected by movement, as well as the impact of pain on quality of life.

The speakers who presented at this event:

  • Paul Smith - Senior Scientist, GSK HPL
  • Dr. Phill Bell - Senior Scientist, GSK HPL
  • Matt Portas – Lead in Physical Performance Education, The Football Association
  • James Wild – Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach, Surrey Sports Park and England Women's Lacrosse
  • Stuart Elwell – Functional Movement Systems Expert and Director at Stuart Elwell Physiotherapy

Paul Smith

Senior Scientist, GSK HPL

Paul joined the GSK HPL in February 2016 and is currently leading the movement research area that focuses on human movement analysis and biomechanical assessment to enhance quality of life and performance. He has previously worked as a lecturer on the Kinesiology and Biomechanics module at Waterford Institute of Technology and at Dundalk Institute of Technology on the Health and Physical Activity Degree Programme.

Paul is in the final year of a PhD study which focuses on the links between functional movement assessment and injury in elite performers and the use of motion capture technology to enhance movement analysis in a field setting. Paul also has over six years experience of providing sports science support to international/professional teams and elite athletes in Ireland across various sports, including; football, basketball, tennis, boxing, horse racing and rugby.
