Symposium: Practical considerations for maintenance and measurement of muscle mass

Date: Friday 6th November 10am - 3.30pm
Venue: GSK Human Performance Lab, Brentford

On Friday 6th November the GSK HPL hosted an exclusive event, exploring the scientific background and practical considerations of muscle mass and its maintenance and measurement.

We were delighted to welcome an impressive line-up of expert speakers presenting on subjects including: maintaining muscle mass at altitude, changes in body composition during ultra-endurance events and novel methods to assess muscle mass in clinical populations.

The speakers who presented were:

  • Matthew Furber – Senior Scientist, GSK HPL
  • Tessa Morris – Senior Scientist, GSK HPL
  • Joshua Jackman – PhD Student, GSK HPL
  • Dr. Oliver Witard – Senior Lecturer in Sports Nutrition, University of Stirling
  • Mark Ellison – Performance Nutritionist, GB Boxing

Phill Bell

Senior Scientist, GSK HPL

Phill joined the HPL team in late 2013 following an exercise physiology lecturing role at Nottingham Trent University. He completed his PhD at Northumbria University in Exercise Physiology in 2015, focussing on a nutritional supplement for accelerating recovery from exercise. In addition to his Senior Scientist role, Phill acts as laboratory Co-Director as part of the HPL’s BASES Lab Accreditation. He has extensive experience working elite performers, supporting international athletes in several sports including road cycling, triathlon, football and rugby.

Phill also has a strong background in Sports Science research, with a number of publications in the exercise physiology field. Within the HPL, Phill leads on a number of scientific support projects with elite partners as well as discovery research projects focussing on recovery and physiological adaptation.

Dr. Oliver Witard

Senior Lecturer in Sports Nutrition, University of Stirling

Oliver’s research focus is protein nutrition for maximising muscle adaptation to training. His publications focus on establishing the optimal dose, source and timing of dietary protein for maximising gains in muscle mass. To address these research questions, Oliver has expertise in stable isotope methodology for the measurement of muscle protein synthesis – the primary metabolic regulator of muscle mass.

Oliver has delivered several invited talks on protein nutrition at national/international symposiums, including keynote talks at the Dutch Olympic Committee, Polish Institute of Sport, The Nutrition Series, Bogota, Columbia and British Society of Research in Ageing conference, Liverpool. In 2010, Oliver was awarded a Young Investigator Award (1st place) at the European College of Sports Science congress for his work demonstrating improved tolerance to high- intensity training with increased dietary protein intake. More recently, he participated in the Scottish Crucible and Rank Prize mini- symposium in Sports Nutrition.

Matthew Furber

Senior Scientist, GSK HPL

Matthew has been working as an applied and research scientist at the GSK Human Performance Lab since it opened in 2013. He leads on a number of elite applied sport partnerships within the HPL, including close work with British Triathlon Federation and GB Canoeing. In addition to this, Matthew is a national trainer for UK Anti-Doping and sits on the education team. Prior to the HPL he worked as sport scientist for Lucozade Sport and lectured in Sport Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the University of Hertfordshire, where he also managed the Human Performance Centre.

Matthew is currently writing up his PhD thesis on dietary manipulation, endurance training and cellular adaptation.

Joshua Jackman

PhD Student, GSK HPL

Joshua joined the GSK Human Performance Lab after studying for an MRes degree at Nottingham Trent University. His initial role within the science team was primarily to support across a range of R&D discovery projects, whilst also contributing to the delivery of science support to the HPL’s elite performance partners. In combination with this role, Joshua is now studying for a PhD with a research focus on investigating the role of specificity in applying recovery strategies for acute recovery and chronic adaptation.

Tessa Morris

Senior Scientist, GSK HPL

Tessa is a Senior Scientist and has been at the GSK Human Performance Lab since June 2013, leading on discovery research and collaborating with elite partners. She has previously worked at Liverpool John Moores University, before starting as a Performance Scientist for Lucozade. Tessa has great experience working within team sports in particular, including the Premier League for five years, as well as individual sport athletes in British athletics and triathlon.

One of her roles within the HPL team is Science Lead for McLaren Honda Formula One and Rory McIlroy, as well as a supporting role with other partners, including extreme exploration. Tessa is studying for her PhD with Kings College London in the Centre for Human Aerospace Physiology.

Mark Ellison

Performance Nutritionist, GB Boxing

Mark has over 10 years experience in weight management, beginning his career working in adolescent eating disorder support before making the move to British Wrestling in 2006. He began his work in Boxing in 2008, supporting the Great Britain team through the London 2012 Olympics resulting in three gold, one silver and one bronze medal. He is also Nutrition Consultant to Manchester United football club.

He provides the GSK Human Performance Lab with practical experience in weight management nutrition ensuring that any research conducted is translatable to athletes’ day-to-day training and performance. Mark holds a BSc in Food and Nutrition from Manchester Metropolitan University and was one of the first to complete the International Olympic Committee’s Diploma in Sports Nutrition in 2007.
