SYMPOSIUM FROM SCIENCE TO PERFORMANCE

From science to performance - current insights into fuelling, recovery and adaptation

Date: Thursday 9th April 12pm - 4.30pm
Venue: GSK Human Performance Lab, Brentford

On the 9th of April, the GSK HPL hosted an afternoon exploring the scientific background and practical applications of fuelling, acute and long-term recovery and adaptation.

We were delighted to have an impressive line-up of expert speakers presenting on the theory and practical applications of concurrent training recovery, long-term adaptations and muscle mass recovery and fuelling.

The speakers who presented were:

  • Dr. Duncan French – Strength and Conditioning Technical Lead, EIS
  • Dr. Jonathan Leeder – Performance Lead, EIS
  • Matthew Furber – Scientist, GSK Human Performance Lab
  • Lee Eddens – Scientist, GSK Human Performance Lab
  • Dr. Phillip Bell – Scientist, GSK Human Performance Lab
  • Dr. Gary Brickley – Senior Lecturer, University of Brighton

Dr. Ken van Someren

Head of R&D, GSK HPL

As Director of Research & Development at the GSK HPL, Ken leads on discovery research and scientific support of high performance partners. Prior to joining GSK, he was Director of Sports Sciences at the English Institute of Sport, leading the sport science support to British sports and athletes in the four years leading up to London 2012. Ken now holds a position on the Technical Advisory Board of the English Institute of Sport.

His research interests include the physiological determinants of sports performance, exercise-induced muscle damage and athletic recovery strategies. With long-standing experience in the academic sector, Ken currently holds a number of academic appointments, including Visiting Professor at Northumbria University and visiting Professor at St Mary’s University.

Matthew Furber

Senior Scientist, GSK HPL

Matthew has been working as an applied and research scientist at the GSK Human Performance Lab since it opened in September 2013. His current research focuses around nutrition and metabolic adaptation along with fuelling for performance. Matthew also leads on a number of elite sport partnerships within the HPL, including the British Triathlon Federation and British Canoeing. He also works closely with ultra endurance athletes competing in events ranging from Ironman to Race Across America.

Prior to joining the HPL, Matthew worked as a Lecturer in Sport Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the University of Hertfordshire and managed the University Human Performance Centre. Matthew is also a national trainer and sits on the education team with UK Anti-doping.

Dr. Duncan French

Strength and Conditioning Lead, English Institute of Sport

As Technical Lead of Strength and Conditioning Coaching at the English Institute of Sport (EIS), Duncan is responsible for coaching international, world and Olympic athletes from a variety of sports, from football and basketball, to taekwondo. He is a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology (Strength and Conditioning) at Northumbria University and a founding member and former Chairman of the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA).

Duncan provides the HPL with both academic and practical expertise in the fields of neuroendocrine and muscle physiology, in particular responses to resistance training and the mechanisms of recovery and regeneration.

Lee Eddens

PhD student, GSK HPL

Lee joined the GSK Human Performance Lab Team in September 2014, following his role at UK Sport on the Research & Innovation Team. Lee has a range of experience working with elite performers, providing performance solutions across the London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, with the majority of his applied experience focusing on work with the GB Skeleton and GB Bobsleigh Teams.

Lee’s current Sports Science research interests focus on recovery and adaptation within a concurrent exercise paradigm.

Dr. Gary Brickley

Senior Lecturer, University of Brighton

Dr Gary Brickley is a senior lecturer in Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition, who also coaches high performance Paralympic cyclists. After his undergraduate degree, Gary completed his PhD in muscle metabolism during high intensity exercise. He followed his PhD, with a MSc in cardiology. Gary worked for British Cycling as a physiologist at the start of lottery funding and has since worked with Paracyclists through 4 Paralympic Games.

He is a BASES accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist, holder of the Musabini medal for elite coaching and has published work on cycling, race walking, swimming, diabetes and heart failure. During this time in cycling his athletes have won 15 Paralympic gold medals and have broken world records from 200m to the track hour record.
