We’re delighted to announce an exciting new partnership between the English Institute of Sport and the GSK Human Performance Lab that will further scientific innovation and support to elite sport in England.
Working with sports to identify the performance questions that can be answered through research, the EIS will work with the HPL to carry out a range of research projects to further enhance the support that it provides to national governing bodies of sport in the build-up to Rio 2016 and beyond.
The first research projects this innovative partnership will focus on are:
Nigel Walker, National Director of the EIS, said: “Working with partners like the GSK Human Performance Lab enables us to create a stronger and more sustainable support system for the future. Accessing the facilities and resources of commercial partners also allows us to maximise the reach of the public investment we receive. Through this partnership the English Institute of Sport will increase its capacity and capability of training science support and innovation it can offer to NGBs through the areas of expertise and technology that are unique to the GSK Human Performance Lab.”
The EIS is the science, medicine and technology arm of UK Sport and, funded by the National Lottery, it aims to increase the probability of success of the British athletes it supports. It does this by providing expertise and support in all areas of performance including optimising training programmes, maximising competition performance, improving athlete health and wellbeing and identifying and developing talent. Its practitioners span 10 disciplines including sport medicine, physiology, performance nutrition and psychology. Working closely with sports to identify what it takes to win, the EIS establishes the performance team, technology & engineering and wider research and expertise needed within each sport to answer performance questions.
Mark Langley, General Manager of the GSK HPL, said: “Our aim is to support the EIS on strategic research projects that will give them, in identified areas, a greater understanding of what can drive and improve performance. Scientific research with partners like the EIS and the athletes they support will ultimately help us develop products that better meet the healthcare needs of all our consumers.”
