On Thursday 24th September, the GSK HPL held its fourth expert webcast of 2015, Rugby and decision making.

This webcast featured an impressive panel of experts who highlighted contemporary scientific literature and shared applied insights from their areas of expertise. 

Topics discussed included:

  • Cognitive performance and the broader context of the impact in rugby players
  • Use of cognitive monitoring and assessments in training programmes
  • Unanswered questions in the area of cognition


The webcast was hosted by Dr. Ken van Someren, Research and Development Director at the GSK Human Performance Lab.Joining Ken on the panel were:

  • Dr. Barry O’Neill - Principal Scientist and Cognition Lead, GSK Human Performance Lab
  • Dr. Scott Drawer - Athletic Performance Manager, Rugby Football Union
  • Prof. Vincent Walsh - Professor of Human Brain Research, University College London

Ken van Someren

Ken van Someren
Head of R&D, GSK HPL

In his role at the HPL Ken is leading discovery research and scientific support of high performance partners. Prior to joining GSK, Ken was the Director of Sports Sciences at the English Institute of Sport (EIS), leading the sport science support to British sports and athletes in the four years leading up to London 2012. Ken now holds a position on the Technical Advisory Board of the English Institute of Sport. 

His research interests include the physiological determinants of sports performance, exercise-induced muscle damage and athletic recovery strategies. With long-standing experience in the academic sector, Ken currently holds a number of academic appointments, including Visiting Professor at Northumbria University and Visiting Professor at St Mary’s University.

Barry O'Neill
Principal Scientist and Cognition Lead, GSK HPL

In his role as Cognition Lead, Barry is spearheading research into brain processes in high performers in an effort to assess, monitor and train aspects of cognition that are directly relevant to elite performance. He completed his PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia in 2008. Since obtaining his PhD, Barry has held various roles within GSK, from early stage drug development in their pharmaceutical division to research on the central effects of novel ingredients, functional foods and herbal extracts for GSK Nutrition.

Prof. Vincent Walsh
Professor of Human Brain Research, UCL

As Professor of Human Brain Research at UCL, Vincent specialises in human brain stimulation and plasticity, supervising over 30 PhD students across a variety of diverse fields such as memory, dyslexia, time perception and decision making and stress in sport. With over 20 years experience in Human Brain Research Vincent has, and continues to, serve on committees including the European Commission, The Royal Society, The Medical Research Council and the Bioscience for Society Strategy Panel (BBSRC). He currently holds a Royal Society Industry Fellowship allowing him to spend 50% of his time supporting ‘real world’ research.

Published in scientific literature over 300 times, Vincent brings to the GSK Human Performance Lab significant academic expertise in human brain stimulation, learning, sporting performance, perception and sleep.Vincent holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of Sheffield and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Manchester.

Scott Drawer

Dr Scott Drawer
Athletic Performance Manager, RFU

At the Rugby Football Union, Scott is responsible for the men’s and women’s international science and medicine performance teams (Saxons, Under 20s, 18s and Sevens) outside the England Senior Elite Player Squad. Scott is also responsible for working in partnership with the club academies in the development of athlete performance.

Prior to this, Scott worked with the English Institute of Sport, developing and leading one of the world’s most highly regarded Research and Innovation programmes in high performance sport, impacting on multiple sports and medals counts across a number of summer and winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
